Marvelous, Magnificent, Multi-Purpose Melamine

My first introduction to melamine was on a buying trip with the Sand and Pine girls. We had been searching for a signature stoneware line and came across a beautiful set that we knew we had to have. I picked up one of the plates and immediately knew. The disappointing word “plastic” came out of my mouth. A soft voice beside me said, oh so politely, “Not plastic, Melamine.” Oookaaaay…and thus began my education.

I’m going to be totally honest here. Look below and tell me, who doesn’t have a cabinet that looks like this? While I no longer have children living in my house, the grand kids often visit, hence the need for sectioned plastic dinnerware and matching cups. I say “matching” loosely!

To replace this mess with a set of dinnerware that would look beautiful in the cupboard and on the table, and also have the durability and kid safety of plastic is my dream. Our melamine line is the answer!

The kitchen cupboard that shall not be seen.

Our melamine dishware is made from light weight, durable, and heat resistant material. This material is an organic-based, nitrogen-rich chemical compound blended with strengthening materials which help create melamine’s signature durability. Beyond good looks, there are many additional advantages to using melamine. Let’s explore those together!

Benefits of Melamine DIshware:

  1. Food-Safe: Melamine is FDA approved as safe for use with foods and our melamine carries the additional safety of being BPA free. Planta is a proprietary certified and tested material and the Planta line by TarHong is made with mostly bamboo powder and cornstarch for a natural majority plant-based plastic.

  2. Affordable: Melamine is an affordable alternative to stoneware and china while mimicking the look of real stoneware, china, or wood. Investing in melamine can save you money up front and long term. Compared to china, melamine has a replacement rate 40% to 130% lower. That means if you want to change your style or color at some later date, melamine is much more cost effective!

  3. Durability: A huge plus in my book is melamine’s extreme resistance to breakage, chipping or scratching. Stating this, I would still not use knives with serrated edges when cutting or scratchy brillo pads when cleaning.

  4. Lightweight: Easy for kids to handle when carrying to and from the dining table or outside venue, our TarHong melamine is also stackable. This, plus the lighter weight of the dishware makes for less trips to and from the dining area when serving and cleaning.

  5. Temperature resistant: There is no need to worry about accidental burns as melamine does not absorb the heat from hot food placed on its surface.

  6. Dishwasher safe: Place our melamine on any level of your dishwasher for quick and sanitary cleaning.

  7. Versatile designs and colors: We offer several color options and dishware sizes from bowls to serving platters to meet all your dining needs.

  8. Suitable for all dining styles: Use our melamine dishware, for dining room, kitchen, patio, and poolside dining. You will never run the risk of shattered dishes and dangerous glass shards if an accidental drop occurs.

While the benefits of melamine are numerous, there are some simple rules of care that should be followed to extend the life of your melamine dishware. As I said above, you should never use a serrated knife on melamine products. While scratch resistant, this type of knife can be harmful to your melamine finish.

As for cooking or warming, in addition to not using melamine in the microwave, the oven is off limits. The exposure to high heat will cause a browning in the melamine surface and result in damage to the integrity of the dishware material.

Finally, when cleaning, do not use chlorine bleach or highly abrasive cleaners which can dull and scratch your melamine surface.

So many of us are concerned about the planet and purchasers of melamine are no different. While not recyclable in the traditional sense, melamine can be ground down and used as a filler for other plastic or wood composites. You can reach out to you local recycling center for more information regarding the disposal of your traditional melamine products.
